DENTAL SERVICES
Dental disease is a common health problem affecting 75% of dogs and cats over
the age of three. Left untreated, dental disease can not only lead to bad breath,
pain, and tooth decay or loss; but also causing system diseases such as heart, kidney and liver problems.
Dental Before
Dental After
A dental procedure is a comprehensive procedure performed under general anesthesia that
allows us to completely evaluate and treat your pet’s teeth and gums. Typically the procedure
involves probing, ultrasonic and hand scaling, and polishing of the teeth. However, there are
instances where dental disease has progressed, and more extensive treatment is required.
Extraction of diseased, broken or abnormal teeth is sometimes necessary to eliminate pain for
your pet and to maintain good oral health. We offer dental radiographs (x-rays) which are
essential in order to evaluate the pulp (inside of the tooth) and the root before the doctor
determines whether tooth extraction is needed.
At Donegal Animal Hospital, we are committed to provide the highest standard of care to ensure
the safety and well being of your pet. While modern anesthesia is very safe, nothing in life is
without some risk. Therefore pre-anesthetic blood work and intravenous fluids are a routine part
of our dental procedures. The pre-anesthetic blood work includes a complete blood count
(CBC) and a blood chemistry profile which helps evaluate organ function to determine which
anesthetic protocol is right for your pet. Intravenous fluids help to maintain blood pressure and
also speeds recovery.

Annual veterinary dental care and home dental care will help keep your pet's breath fresh and
gums and teeth healthy, and can add years to your pet's life!
